In these difficult times for farming, older tractors are kept going well past the stage when previously they would have been replaced by a newer model. For many years now, local farmers have come to rely on Dai Dolau as their source of parts to keep their David Brown tractors working.
As a working farmer himself, Dai, of Dolaugwyrddon, near Lampeter in West Wales, knows all about their problems. David Brown manufacturing ended in 1988 and parts for these tractors are becoming quite hard to come by. Dai has a fleet of DB tractors in use on his organic farm, (quite sensibly as parts are readily available) and if a customer is interested in one of these models most of the faults are known to him - knowledge which he readily shares with his customers.
Dai's work is now an important and vital lifeline in the cash-strapped agricultural sector, as his prices are not super-inflated as you might expect for discontinued machinery components. The prices are, in his words, "what I would be prepared to pay if I were buying".
Interested? If you need parts for your David Brown, whether you're a farmer or a collector, please get in touch. Opening hours are very flexible, usually seven days a week (but not Christmas Day!). It's best to phone first before visiting, to check whether parts are available and to allow time for them to be found or removed from scrap tractors.
Dai started recovering used parts for the David Brown tractors on his own farm back in 1984 as a practical way of keeping down costs, and this has developed into a growing business which now attracts customers from all parts of Wales and beyond. "Although there are a large number of models of David Brown tractors, I seem to satisfy the demands of most customers. I think however, that I make more friends than money!"
